The European Parliament today passed landmark amendments to the Digital Services Act (DSA), introducing the world's most comprehensive regulatory framework for AI-generated content and online safety. The amendments, approved by a 612-73 vote, require all platforms operating in the EU with more than 45 million monthly active users to implement mandatory labelling for AI-generated text, images, and video.

The new regulations also introduce enhanced protections for minors, prohibiting targeted advertising to users under 18 and requiring platforms to implement age-appropriate design features. Very Large Online Platforms (VLOPs) will face additional obligations, including mandatory independent audits of their algorithmic systems and the establishment of a 24-hour rapid response mechanism for viral disinformation during elections.

Commissioner Thierry Breton stated that Europe is setting the global standard for digital regulation. The amendments will come into force on 1 January 2027, with non-compliant platforms facing fines of up to 8% of their global annual turnover.
